It’s a beautiful day and figured I’d get a photo with the wild poinsettia’s that I noticed growing here about a month ago! The butterflies were enjoying them as well. I’d never seen them growing in the wild, only in pots during Christmas, then left to dry out and die by the time New Year’s came around. I always tried to save them, but it was a hard fought battle. They simply weren’t meant to be in pots in dry, hot offices with no sun. So it’s nice to see them flourishing here.
The other day, I got a present from Mother Nature when a yellow-throated Euphonia flew into the house and I was able to catch it and spend a little time with him. Sure was a beauty! Small too…only a little larger than a hummingbird. He had beautiful dark blue feathers and the contrasting yellow really made him stand out. Of course, I had to sniff it and sure enough, he smelled good too! I’m beginning to think all birds must smell good!? They all seem to have a similar scent. He turned out to be ok and flew off fairly quickly. So that was a nice gift!

We’re having a chilly Christmas here, but the sun is shining bright, the sky is clear and there is very little wind, so all in all, a nice winter day. Just waiting for Jeremy and Kelly to arrive so we can start opening presents. Even without a turkey, I have spent most of the day cooking – how does that happen??
Enjoy the day, possibly in a simpler way – and right now, that sounds like a pretty good idea.

Those poinsettias are fab! I remember that when I saw them as a kid they grew prolifically in the mountains around Monterrey Mexico. I planted one in the front yard at our home on Kirby Lane in Austin Texas once when I was about 11. Miraculously it grew and grew and ended up about 12 ft high – over the roof of our 1 story house. Believe it or not, it sometimes there were enough dark nights to produce red leaves in the winter. Over all it was a pretty ugly bush – but in the winter it was fabulous. You’re right – I never have seen one with a butterfly.
Are butterflies related to dragon flies? Dragonflies are almost always “attached at the hip” and they bite people in swimming pools while attached – how’s that for multitasking! I think dragonflies are pretty mean. So I’ll be glad to know if there are butterfly species that are gentle and kind so that my perception of them wont be wiped out completely when you tell us the truth about butterflies.

ha! Yeah, it’s kind of like sloths fighting. You think they’re all nice and cuddly but they can really hate on each other. Same with koala’s. The cuteness is a total front. So it won’t surprise me if butterflies (like hummingbirds) have a bad attitude.
